Better emergency bag

Dutch site Denkvooruit (dutch; translation) has instructions about the kind of emergency bag you should have at home in case of a national disaster. And although the site says it only suggests a list of items to put in there, there is room for improvement.

For instance, most of the items are run on batteries. A wind up torch like this one or a solar powered/crank up radio in stead of a battery powered ones might be a better suggestion. In stead of bottles of water a water purifier/purifier bottle or how about using a flint in stead of matches. Not to mention that you could put it all in a solar bag to power other items (like cellphones). These items are more durable (not to mention more environmental) making for a better lifespan.

Don't get me wrong: initiatives like this are highly recommendable. But it seems that the items mentioned on the site have a limited time of use. And when it comes to disasters you want the stuff in your emergency bag to be as durable and usable for as long as it takes.

The move to Mac

For a couple of years now I read about the fascination people had with all things Mac. How much better they thought they had it compared to Windows users. How they never had any IT problems with Mac OSX. Friends of mine (IT pros) bought Macs and said they were satisfied with it. So I got curious. So curious in fact that two months ago, I switched my primary computer from a Shuttle Windows machine to a Macbook.

The thing was I wanted to switch from a desktop to a notebook. I like the portability of a notebook and after more than 4 years my little, trusty pc was due for an upgrade, but I got a good opportunity for it to sell. I've used Windows 95, 98, ME (bit of hate there), 2000 and XP and I have respect for what Microsoft does: they have to build an OS that works on numerous combinations of hardware (a problem Apple does not have since they build their own) whitout problems while constantly being scrutinized for being the biggest software company in the world. I never had the big horror stories that some seem to have. Maybe this was do to the fact I kept my firewall, virus-software and updates up to date and never installed software I wasn't exactly sure of. But for full disclosure: I have had my viruses and an occasional blue screen, but those where minor and over the last 10 or so years, my computer experience has been mostly good. But to put it like this: I don't hate Windows or Microsoft.

But as stated I got curious. So after doing research I took the leap and bought a black model of the Macbook. It took little time to get used to (really, when you know your way around a pc, the Mac has no real hurdles), but let's not get into detail. Just the likes and dislikes.

Likes:

Installing/removing applications:
Really, this is a no-brainer. Just throw it in the applications folder and it'll work. Just throw it in the trash from the applications folder and it's gone. That easy. At least for 95% of the programs. There are some programs (Office for Mac for instance) that seem to do things a little different, but most of the programs I installed come from the former category.

Sleep function:
Somehow this never worked really well in Windows. Works like a charm in Mac.

Quicksilver:
Quicksilver should come pre-installed with every Mac. It's that good. Another bonus it's that it's Open Source and free.

The smaller things such as the overall design from both hard- and software. Almost every program I used on my Windows machine has a Mac counterpart. That there's no real learning curve. Time Machine and iLife are a great set of applications.

Dislikes:

Itunes:
Itunes plays the music and has some good features, but when you come from being a Winamp user with its easy to use interface and options, Itunes is a bit of a disappointment. Reloading 5000+ mp3's in Winamp is a snap; in Itunes it takes time.

No tabs on a taskbar:
Call me Windows-nostalgic. I usually had a lot of windows open and would switch between them easily clicking away on the taskbar. I miss that on the Mac.

Finder is no Explorer:
I just prefer Windows Explorer to Finder. No real reason, I just do.

Then there are the smaller things: having to do the force-quits on some applications that stopped running. The fact that I can't get the firewall to do what I really want it to. The fact that you have to Cmd + Q to quit programs. Having to use iSync and Contacts to sync my Nokia phone to Entourage. No simple way (yet) to sync my Google Calendar to Entourage (although it seems there is some hope). That when you click a bit below the application bar it goes back to the Finder bar. Some hassle importing settings for Firefox. But those are minor and could be part of me not knowing the ins and outs of the applications. There's still a bit of a learning curve there.

Despite that, my experiences with the Mac and OSX have been great. I love the design of the UI and the Macbook itself. It's true is that it just works. There are a few snags, but nothing major. It's a great system with good software and I'm satisfied with it.

It is however not the eye-opening or life-altering experience that some claim it to be.

Ylliks 3rd year anniversary

Another year has past since I first took up blogging. And after 3 years it's still fun to churn out at least one post a week. Truth be told that most post were Weekly Linkages and my promise of writing more "real" posts hasn't materialized due to several reasons. But that won't stop me posting.

Reading different blogs, finding those interesting, goofy or strange links and sharing them is fun. A personal blog like mine will never get a massive readership, but those who come back every week are highly appreciated. Especially the positive feedback I get is one of the many reasons that makes doing this worth while for me.

So thanks for reading another year of this blog and I'll hope to see you back in the future!

Things noticed in Dublin

Last week I took a city trip to the Irish capital Dublin (see pictures here). Here are a few things I noticed there.

A lot of people I met were friendly and helpful. Whether it was the taxi driver from my drive to the hotel who gave me tips on what to see, where to get great deals or where to eat or the locals who saw you standing with a map in your hand and gave directions or people offering you a (albeit free) newspaper on the bus.
Gaelic Football is a bit of a strange sport, but enjoyable to watch (especially in a bar with some Irishmen).
If you're not into meeting drunk/loud people: don't go to the Temple Bar district in the evening/night. If you don't mind it's a great place to spend an evening enjoying yourself.
Despite the smoking ban in places like restaurants, pubs, governmental buildings and the like, there are still a lot of Irish who smoke. Not just adults, but kids in their early teens as well. Maybe it's more apparent because they smoke outside, but the smoking ban doesn't seem to have the desired effect.
Dublin bus timetables are more of a suggestion since the city is so jammed with traffic. It's not a real problem if you're not in hurry, but if you rely on it to get you to a certain place on time you could be in for some trouble.
Also on the Dublin bus double-deckers: when you get up to the upper deck be sure to duck if you're taller than 6 feet (1.83 m) or you're gonna hit your head on the roof. Trust me.
You have to be some kind of daredevil (or have a dead wish) to go biking in Dublin's rush hour.
People hold their mobile phones. They don't put them in their pockets or bags. They just hold them.
Not surprisingly: souvenir shops in Dublin have an abundance of green items.

Every countries' inhabitants have their own unique characteristics and in Dublin that's no exception. Experiencing those differences in cultures and habits is what makes traveling worth while.

With the amount of desktop wallpaper sites in mind, it's easy to conclude that people like their desktop to be a colorful and visual experience. I'm no different. But in stead of having a Photoshop wonderland as a background, I often find myself looking for real photographs.

And one of the best resources to find extraordinary photographs (with the occasional Photoshopwizardry thrown in) is Sam Ravanrough's Daily Dose Of Imagery photoblog. With his observational and photo graphical talents he's able to capture the beauty of everyday objects and environments.

Talkshow skid goes a step further

Jimmy Kimmel, host of Jimmy Kimmel Live has a little skid going on with Matt Damon, always seeming to bump him from the show because they run out of time. At one time, it seemed he got his chance on the show, but due to a long introduction, Kimmel ran out of time again and Damon got into a (obviously staged) fit.

Damon took "revenge" with the help of Kimmel's girlfriend Sarah Silverman, recording and showing this lovely duet.

But Kimmel got his due now, using a long time friend of Damon, Ben Affleck. Here's the video of their "collaboration", featuring more cameos then you can imagine.

Highly entertaining in my view. And whether you like this kind of entertainment or not, you have to appreciate the effort they put into it.

Numbers to last a lifetime

At one point in your life you'll receive a social security number, which will stay with you until you die. It's used for your taxes, social benefits and other related issues. It defines who you are with all kinds of government agencies and whenever you use that number when you contact them, they'll recognize you. It's the only number you have to remember to get all the governmental services and (regrettably) pay your taxes. So why can't this be the case for more services?

Number portability on mobile phones is becoming mainstream and companies like GrandCentral offer you a single phone number for all your phones. So it's not uncommon for certain businesses. See it as an OpenID. You get one ID or policy number and with that particular number you can receive all kinds of services from companies who make use of that program for as long as you live.

Certainly for insurance companies this could work. As a consumer you get an overall policy number (for instance issued by the branch organization) which serves as your overall insurance number. Whatever insurance you want to have will be filed under that number, no matter which insurer you use. So you can get your house insured at insurer A, while you get life insurance at insurer B and car insurance at insurer C. You don't have to worry about the internal policy numbers of those companies, all you have to remember is that one insurance number, whenever the need arises. As a consumer you have the choice to get the products you want at whatever insurer without having to change your entire administration.

Same can be the case for other businesses. Telecom is another obvious example with one ID/Policy-number for your mobile, landline and internet connection. But for this to work companies would have to change the way they operate, be more transparant and give away part of the control they have over processes. It remains to be seen if they're willing to do this, but it'll be a great service for customers.

Above is the result of a readability test for this blog.

If you believe the test whatever is written on this blog can only be understood by a genius. That of course seriously limits the amount of potential readers. Could that be the reason that this blog is not in the Technorati Top Blogs list? Because when you look at it's top 5, four have High School Level Readability (Engadget, Gizmodo, BoingBoing and TechCrunch) and one is at Junior High Level (Huffington Post).

It's more likely that the authors of those blogs have found an effective and entertaining way communicating about popular issues/subjects (4 feature gadgets/geek/tech-news, 1 is about politics) that people are passionate about.

Ylliks 2nd year anniversary

It seems like yesterday that I fired up Blogger for the first time and started writing this post. But that's exactly 2 years and 151 posts ago so today marks Ylliks's 2nd anniversary!

The blog hasn't turned into an Engadget or Huffington Post traffic wise, but I've never expected it to do so. Returning visitors have gone up during the 2 years, so has overall traffic and rss-subscriptions. But don't get me wrong, they are not even up in the several hundreds a month.

But I enjoy the blogging experience weekly and I have some plans to expand it further (maybe to 2 a week) since I want to become a better writer (for professional and personal reasons). The Weekly Linkage will stay put (it returns tomorrow) but I'm planning on doing more actual writing. So expect to see some more posts in the future.

So let me use this opportunity to thank the people who've been kind enough to give me feedback and who visit here on a regular basis. I know who you are and it's highly appreciated.

The joy of one-bag-traveling

Like many travelers I didn't know any better than lugging my heavy suitcases around while traveling, packing things I didn't even use during the holiday (just in case I "might" need them) and waiting and standing around for my bags to come from the conveyor belts in airports. Then I read this post on Tim Ferriss' blog and I figured it was time for a change of habit. And my recent trip to London would be my testing case.

So in stead of my usual suitcase I decided to take a large messenger bag and packed it according to tips provided in Tim's post and from this site. So what did I pack?

1 pair of jeans
2 white plain shirts
1 sweater
4 pair of boxers
4 pair of socks
zip bag containing razor, deo, toothpaste, toothbrush
adapters for mobile phone and camera
international socket adapter
camera
MSR towel (yes, I've read Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy way too much)
Pacsafe security mesh
2 books
day bag (my usual smaller messenger bag)

All in all still a pretty substantial list, but small enough to fit comfortably in my messenger bag (but to be honest big enough to stop those "Man-oh-man I should pack more"-jitters) and weighing in at just under 6 kg.

My "one bag"-approach was vindicated about 10 minutes into my travels. Because of the early hour of the morning the escalator to the stations platform (I went by Eurostar; I think the pros to this way of packing will be even more evident if you travel by plane since you can take it with you as carry-on luggage) weren't operational yet. In front of me was a man hauling his suitcase from step to step while I walked passed him with my bag comfortably over my shoulder. People had the same problems with their suitcases getting into the train and storing them in the front of the passenger cars while I just swung mine in the overhead storage above my seat. For me a bag/suitcase is just a vessel for storing your stuff during a stay in a hotel/hostel. It didn't feel any different for me having the bag in stead of the suitcase. And since I did bring a day bag, I could happily trot around London, using it to store my map, coat (the English weather was unusually kind), bottle of water etc., etc..

There were some little difficulties to overcome. To give an example: I got a rather large stain in my sweater and had to find a way to remove it. Thanks to the very helpful hotel staff this was done rather quickly, were usually I would've thrown it back in my suitcase to take care of it at home after my trip was over.

Overall my experiences with this new way of traveling have been very favorable. There still are some things to iron out for next trips before I can be called a "One bag"-master but if it has taught me one thing it's this: I'll never travel another way again.
